March 19, 2009 - Georgia Art League Meeting

The meeting was called to order and Cheryl Hardin asked our guests to introduce themselves. Over 45 members and guests attended the meeting which was held on the studio level of the Quinlan.

Our guest speaker, Linda Kirkpatrick, from Peachtree Plantation, an assisted living facility in Oakwood, spoke about an upcoming opportunity to exhibit and sell our work.

On April 24 from 6:00 to 8:00, Peachtree Plantation is hosting an "April in Paris Vine and Cheese Reception" for the community. They have asked for artists to submit works of art that will hang April 24 to May 4. The works can be for sale, and the artists and their guests are invited to attend the reception. They have room to display over 100 pieces of art! Peachtree Plantation is a wonderful place, and a wonderful opportunity to showcase/sell your work in the community.

Artwork may be dropped off at Peachtree Plantation, 4251 Hudson Drive, Oakwood, March 19 to April 21 from 10am to 4pm. Ask for Linda Kirkpatrick, Jan Davis, or Chris Gusek when you take in your art. For additional information, contact Linda Kirkpatrick at 770-297-6900.

Today's program featured Georgia Art League artists Christopher Sherry, Anne Brodie Hill, Nona Stephens, and Patti Russell. These terrific artists inspired us to more powerful art through their demonstrations of how to create art that has "magic". It was a fabulous presentation by each of the artists.

Photos - Note the overhead mirror showing the demos.

Anne Brodie Hill enthralled us with her epiphany.

Christopher Sherry showed us techniques to tackle perspective through gradation and color saturation.

Nona Stephens assured us the essence of our art can be enhanced through fine framing.

Patti Russell challenged us to think outside the box and get creative. What is YOUR ICON?

Congratulations, Art League artists!

At the end of our meeting, Anita Stewart offered artists' fine art brushes for sale. The table was mobbed as Art Leaguers surrounded it. Anita said she will return and bring more brushes in the fall.

Our April 16th program will feature artist Charles Young Walls. Charles teaches classes at the Quinlan where he trains artists to see and think in a way to make their art completely their own.

Charles says, "In this modern world of high speed everything, some things still take time. Invariably, these are the things of substance and lasting quality. I want my paintings to convey a deeper reality, not a photographic feel. Every painting I paint is a new avenue to explore, new ground to break."

I'm delighted that Charles is going to share his thoughts on painting as well as demo his expressive style. You can see Charles' work at: www.charlesyoungwalls.com. Mark your calendars so you won't miss this great program.

Many thanks to the Georgia Art League members whose countless hours of behind-the-scenes work make our Art League the success it is!
