February 2009, Georgia Art League Juried Show Winners

This show is on display now through May 18 at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center on the studio levels. The show was judged by Amanda Kroll, Executive Director of the Quinlan.

Amanda Kroll had these comments regarding the exhibition: "This was my first judging experience of a show with this of this skill level. This was not an easy task with such a diverse show with so many skilled artists. I took several days and spent a lot of one-on-one time with each piece. I went over the same three elements in my viewing of the art work: composition, how the components were arranged, technique, the actual application and skill displayed in each medium, and the artist’s point of view which, to me, is what each piece had to say about its creator."

The judge's comments are also displayed.

First Place: Ulli Chamberlain, In Space, watercolor - "I loved the technical execution on this piece, watercolor is such a beautiful and versatile medium and this artist just ‘gets it’ wholly and completely. The composition was dynamic, the colors bold and breathtaking. I kept going back to this piece again and again, captivated by the movement of the forms across the surface of the paper. A very nice floating mount and beautiful edge to the piece."

Ulli Chamberlain - 1st Place

Second Place: Rob Lysak, Complementary, oil - "I kept going back to this piece again and again. The broad flat shapes that really implied a sense of form, the curvature of a shoulder, the roundness of a cheek. The colors and composition were visually compelling; it was infused with modernity and framed very, very well."

Rob Lysak - 2nd Place

Third Place: Sandra Landergott, Lanier Sailing Club, oil - "What a lovely little painting. Again, I was taken in by perspective and composition and then retained by color and brush stroke. The drought looks PRETTY here with such a lovely contrast of green and orange. The intimate size worked very well for this composition."

Sandra Landergott - 3rd Place

Honorable Mention: Christopher Sherry, White Birches, acrylic - "I love the warm underpainting on a seemingly monochromatic scene and broken by the offset spot of orange."

Christopher Sherry - Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention: Ann Alexander, Man in the Vine II, oil - "The added 3D element of the bittersweet made for great overall presentation. As a stand alone piece this figure is both elegant and well rendered."

Ann Alexander - Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention: Linda Blount, Lisbon Rooftops, watercolor - "Nice use of layering of transparent watercolor. Framing is perfect with the piece."

Linda Blount - Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention: Malee Hearin, Shrimp are Jumpin’, fused glass - "So cool. I hate using that word, but that is what this is! It’s just too cool. The layers are really magnificent and you really do have to hold this piece to appreciate it fully."

Malee Hearin - Honorable Mention

Honorable Mention: Patti Russell, Blue Tapestry, mixed media - "Eye pleasing composition, nice framing, I like that the materiality of the components are apparent and not disguised in the final composition."

Patti Russell - Honorable Mention
