May 2009, Georgia Art League Juried Show Winners
This show is on display now through August 17 at Peach State Bank & Trust on the third floor. The show was judged by Dr. Robert Westervelt.
Dr. Westervelt was effusive in his praise of our show. He said the show was obviously hung with thought and deliberation in groupings of subject and harmony. He complimented our Art League as clearly being a group of professional artists whose body of work will only grow and progress. His most oft-mentioned comment was regarding the tension between the descriptive and the expressive. He spoke about being painterly vs. illustrative, the discord between elements, ground and figure, and the importance of eliminating discord.
Judge's comments are displayed.
First Place: Anne Trippe, Succulent Colour, Acrylic - Almost a primitive quality regarding the expressive succulents painted with relish. Artist has remarkable ability to move between styles successfully.
Second Place: Debra Yaun, Chickadee in an Apple Tree, Colored pencil - Very craftsmanlike. Color modulation is exquisite.
Third Place: Janet Cornett, Red Beach Umbrellas, Oil - Compelling image - very difficult to simultaneously achieve the spatial and atmospheric. The diagonal works well here.
Honorable Mention: Nona Stephens, Morning Courtship, Oil - Masterful landscape.
Honorable Mention: Dolly Alexander, Just Waitin', Pastel - Works beautifully. Use of subtle contrasts in value enriches.
Honorable Mention: Carmen Stolorena, Mule Deer of N.M., Oil - Reminiscent of Winslow Homer. Pieces fit together. Keen power of observation. Works well.
Honorable Mention: Marge Stewart, The Blue Door, Watercolor - Reminiscent of Edward Hopper. This works. The flat plane and background participate fully.
Honorable Mention: Lenore Wells, French Quarter Rainy Night, Acrylic - Very exciting. Works well.
Honorable Mention: Carol Luttenberg, Sunlight, Watercoor - Expressive modulation.
Honorable Mention: Betty Smith, Inspiration, Mixed Media
Congratulations to all the winners of the May 2009 Georgia Art League Summer Juried Exhibition!
